Safety

2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV

After decades of pushing vehicles to their limits on the World Rally circuit, our engineers have learned a thing or two about what it takes to keep drivers safe. For the i-MiEV, they have engineered a full complement of active and passive safety systems designed to help keep you out of harm's way when driving on terrain that can be just as treacherous: your local streets and highways.

Advanced Airbag System
Standard on the i-MiEV, this advanced six-airbag system* includes two dual-stage supplemental front airbags, front side-impact airbags, and front/rear roof-mounted curtain airbags that help protect your head in the event of a side-impact collision. Because when it comes to safety, we've got your back. And your front. And everything else.
RISE Body Design
Mitsubishi's Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body features a unique shape and strategic crumple zones that absorb and reroute the energy away from the passenger cabin during certain types of impact. Because protecting you when you need it most is worth its weight in safety.
ACOUSTIC VEHICLE ALERTING SYSTEM
Because the i-MiEV doesn't run on a gasoline-powered engine, it creates significantly less noise than traditional vehicles (not to mention zero pollutants and CO2). So to let pedestrians know an electric car is coming, Mitsubishi developed an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System that creates a pleasant, perceptible sound outside of the vehicle during low-speed operation.
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) w/ Brake Override System
The i-MiEV's advanced braking system is a study in safety. By monitoring the speed of each individual wheel and adjusting braking pressure as needed, ABS helps dramatically reduce the chance of skidding on a wide variety of terrain. And for added safety, we incorporated a brake override system that gives preference to the brakes over the accelerator if the driver accidentally steps on both pedals at the same time.
Active Stability Control (ASC)
Yet another standard i-MiEV safety feature, Active Stability Control employs a series of sensors to constantly monitor the grip of the tires on the road. Should the wheels begin to slip, the ASC system works in concert with the anti-lock brake system to apply the brakes intelligently as needed to each wheel, giving you the ultimate sense of control.
BATTERY MOUNTED TO UNIBODY
The i-MiEV's battery pack rests safely and securely beneath a sealed stainless-steel case mounted squarely to the unibody. This not only helps keep you (and it) safe during a collision, it also provides the utmost protection from the elements.
LATCH System
Lower anchors and tethers for children (LATCH) help simplify the attachment of child safety seats, making it easier for you to help keep your child safe.
Seat Belts and Pretensioners
Every Mitsubishi is equipped with three-point seatbelts and head restraints, plus front seatbelt pretensioners that are designed to help tighten the belts in certain frontal impacts and rollovers so the seatbelts can better do their job. Seatbelt load limiters, which help the front seatbelts and airbags work together optimally, are also standard on every i-MiEV.
